Plot

The story opens with the sudden appearance of one of the Soul Reapers (死神, shinigami?, lit. “death god”), a military order who escorts the souls of the dead, named Rukia Kuchiki in teenager Ichigo Kurosaki’s bedroom. She is surprised at his ability to see her, but their conversation is interrupted by the appearance of a “hollow”, an evil spirit who was originally a human soul. After Rukia is severely wounded while trying to protect Ichigo, she attempts to transfer half of her reiatsu (霊圧?, lit. “spirit pressure”) to Ichigo in order to let him face the hollow on equal footing. Ichigo unintentionally absorbs almost all her energy, allowing him to defeat the hollow with ease. The next day Rukia appears in Ichigo’s classroom as a seemingly normal human, and informs Ichigo that his absorption of her powers has left her stranded in the human world until she recovers her strength. In the meantime Ichigo shelters Rukia in his home and takes over her job as a Soul Reaper, battling hollows and guiding lost souls to the afterlife realm known as Soul Society (尸魂界(ソウル·ソサエティ), Sōru Sosaeti?).

After a few months of this arrangement, in the sixth volume of the series, Rukia’s Soul Reaper superiors find out about her giving her powers away (which is illegal in Soul Society) and send a detachment to arrest her, and sentence her to death. Ichigo is unable to stop Rukia’s capture, but with the help of several of his classmates who also possess spiritual abilities and ex-Soul Reaper Captain Kisuke Urahara, he sets off for the Soul Reaper base, located in Soul Society. Once there, Ichigo and company battle against the elites of the Soul Reaper military, and are ultimately successful in halting Rukia’s execution.

It is then revealed that Rukia’s execution and Ichigo’s rescue attempt were both manipulated by Sōsuke Aizen, a high ranking Soul Reaper previously believed to be murdered, as part of a far-reaching plot to take control of Soul Society. Aizen betrays his fellow Soul Reapers and allies himself with the strongest hollows, arrancar, becoming the main antagonist of the series, and Ichigo teams up with his former enemies in Soul Society after learning that the next step in Aizen’s plan involves the destruction of his hometown. However, Ichigo goes with a few friends to the Hollow’s world, Hueco Mundo (虚圏(ウェコムンド), Weko Mundo?), in order to rescue their friend Orihime Inoue who was kidnapped by Aizen in order to reduce the number of Soul Reapers defending Soul Society. At this point, Bleach chronicles the war between Aizen and the Soul Society, a plotline which has not yet been resolved. According to Tite Kubo, the ending of the series is not yet planned out or written.

The Master Swordsman 2000
Cast
Starring Jimmy Lin as Master Swordsman Lu Xiao Feng (陸小鳳)
Co-starring Christopher Lee as Ximen Chuixue
Thomas Ong as Hua Manlou
Max Mok as Truthful Monk

Personal Information
Lu Xiaofeng is perhaps best identified by his trademark “Four Eyebrows” (四條眉毛) to pugilists, as he sports two strands of moustache on his face which are similar to his eyebrows, making him seem as though he has four eyebrows. He is described as good-looking, making him seem very attractive to many female characters in the novel series. He is an alcoholic who enjoys drinking, as well as being a flirt who toys around with women and visits brothels frequently.
Lu Xiaofeng’s true personality and abilities are actually being hidden behind his image of a flirt and alcoholic. He is extremely intelligent and observant like a fox, although it may not seem obvious, which enables him to solve the several mysteries in the novel series. His wit and cunning has also helped to deliver him from danger, often turning the tables on his enemies unexpectedly when he is apparently on the losing end. Lu Xiaofeng also values friendship and often risks his own life to help his friends when needed.

Martial Arts
Lu Xiaofeng is best known for his “Lingxi Finger” (靈犀一指), which enables him to catch and hold enemies’ weapons between his fingers. He does not really use any particular weapon and often relies on his fingers to fight enemies, even when he is being surrounded. Lu Xiaofeng is a Qinggong expert as well, and although Gu Long did not state explicitly Lu Xiaofeng’s Qinggong capability in comparison with other characters, Lu Xiaofeng is no doubt one of the top ten Qing Gong experts in the novel series.

The Novels
The Legend of Lu Xiaofeng (陸小鳳傳奇)
The mysterious sect Qing Yi Lou (青衣樓) which surfaced in the Jianghu stirs up some bloodshed. Lu Xiaofeng’s curiosity spurs him to investigate the issue. He encounters Princess Fengdan (鳳丹公主) of the Kingdom of the Golden Bird (大金鵬國) in the Western regions, who seeks his help on behalf of her father, the King. The King is seeking vengeance on three traitors who betrayed him years ago. They are currently the wealthiest, most powerful and best pugilists in the Jianghu. Lu Xiaofeng is aware that he is unable to complete the mission alone so he enlists the help of his friends Hua Manlou and Ximen Chuixue. Lu Xiaofeng encounters all kinds of danger while dealing with the three traitors but even after they have been killed, the mystery is still not solved yet. Later, Hua Manlou and Princess Fengdan go missing, and Lu Xiaofeng discovers that the King is an imposter. On the brink of imminent danger, Lu Xiaofeng manages to reverse the situation and succeeds in solving the mystery.

The Embroidery Bandit (繡花大盜)
The Embroidery Bandit is suspected to have robbed the Zhenyuan Escort Agency 800,000 worth of gold and broken into the Pingnan Prince’s residence, having blinded the housekeeper Jiang Chongwei (江重威). The chief constable Jin Jiuling (金九鈴) is appointed to investigate the case and arrest the bandit. He seeks Lu Xiaofeng’s help to crack the mystery within eight days. After a series of adventures and enlisting the help of his friends Sikong Zhaixing, Xue Bing (薛冰) and the Serpent King (蛇王), Lu Xiaofeng creates a trap for the Bandit, who unsuspectingly reveals his true identity as Jin Jiuling. Lu Xiaofeng defeats Jin Jiuling in a fight recovers the stolen gold.

Before and After the Duel (決戰前後)
The best swordsmen in the Jianghu Ximen Chuixue and Ye Gucheng have an agreement for a duel to the death on the night of the full moon on the rooftop of the Forbidden City. News of the duel attract the attention of several pugilists who gather in the capital city to watch the duel and they wager amongst themselves on who would emerge as the victor. However, Ximen Chuixue disappears mysteriously and Ye Gucheng is wounded before the duel. Lu Xiaofeng is worried for his friends and sets off to investigate the issue. Lu Xiaofeng’s acquaintances Li Yanbei (李雁北) and Guisun Daye (龜孫大爺) are murdered and his girlfriend Ouyang Qing (歐陽情) is poisoned. Lu Xiaofeng has no clue to who the murderer is and believes that the duel is actually a mask for a sinister plot. Eventually, it is revealed that Ye Gucheng is the mastermind behind the plot to assassinate the emperor and he is stopped by Lu Xiaofeng and Ximen Chuixue. Nevertheless, the duel still proceeds as planned and Ximen Chuixue emerges victorious by slaying Ye Gucheng.

The Silver Hook Gambling House (銀鉤賭坊)
The son of the Demon Sect’s (魔教) leader is murdered and the owner of the Silver Hook Gambling House (銀鉤賭坊) Lanhuzi (藍鬍子) frames Lu Xiaofeng for it. Lanhuzi promises to help Lu Xiaofeng clear his name with the condition that Lu help him find his ex-wife Li Xia (李霞) and the Demon Sect’s sacred object Luocha Tablet (羅剎牌). Lu Xiaofeng manages to recover the Luocha Tablet but finds it to be a fake one. The real one is actually with Lanhuzi. Lan Hu Zi used Lu Xiaofeng to help him buy time and divert attention so he could seize control of the Demon Sect using the tablet. However, Lan Hu Zi is eventually killed and the Luocha Tablet returned to its original owner.

The Mountain House of Ghosts (幽靈山莊)
Lu Xiaofeng apparently molested Ximen Chuixue’s wife and incurs the wrath of Ximen. Ximen has been pursuing him and trying to kill him. To avoid Ximen Chuixue, Lu Xiaofeng seeks refuge in the sinister Mountain House of Ghosts (幽靈山莊) under the master Laodao Bazi (老刀把子) and becomes part of them. Laodao Bazi is planning an “Operation Thunder” (天雷行動) to eliminate four of his sworn enemies and obtain a notebook recording the secrets of the Jianghu, which is concealed inside the Wudang Sect leader’s hat. Lu Xiaofeng participates in the operation but eventually the operation fails and Lu Xiaofeng exposes Laodao Bazi’s evil plans. In fact, Lu Xiaofeng and Ximen Chuixue have staged the hunt-down-and-kill incident to trick Laodao Bazi so Lu Xiaofeng can infiltrate the hideout and foil Operation Thunder. Laodao Bazi is actually the Wudang Sect elder Taoist Mu.

The Phoenix Dances in the Nine Heavens (鳳舞九天)
A large amount of gold belonging to the Taiping Prince (太平王) is robbed during its delivery. 109 expert martial artists who are escorting the gold are missing as well and the incident causes much fear in the Jianghu. The Jianghu’s only hope Lu Xiaofeng is nowhere to be found when he is needed as he is roaming the land freely. Lu Xiaofeng meets Yue Yang (岳洋) and Niuroutang (牛肉湯), who turn out to be actually pugilists in disguise. This arouses his interest to investigate further. Lu Xiaofeng finds a way to get onboard the same ship as them but in the middle of the sea, a storm causes him to be shipwrecked and he is cast onto a desolate island. Later while exploring the island, Lu Xiaofeng discovers that the island is home to a group of pugilists and the missing men are held captive there by a man named Gong Jiu (宮九). Lu Xiaofeng also meets a mysterious maiden called Sha Man (沙曼), whom he falls in love with. After Lu Xiaofeng escapes from the island with Sha Man, Gong Jiu spreads the news that Lu Xiaofeng is responsible for robbing the gold. Lu Xiaofeng is forced to hide from the government and he seeks the help of his close friend Ximen Chuixue. Through a series of investigations, Lu Xiaofeng confirms that Gong Jiu is the mastermind behind the plot and he confronts Gong Jiu at the prince’s residence. During the battle, Lu Xiaofeng unleashes his legendary power “The Phoenix Dances in the Nine Heavens” and defeats Gong Jiu.

Laughter of the God of Sword (劍神一笑)
The “God of Sword” Ximen Chuixue seeks help from Lu Xiaofeng to find Liu Chengfeng (柳乘風) of the Mount Ba Sword Sect (巴山劍派). Lu Xiaofeng disguises himself and enters the town on the desert border and finds Liu, but Liu had been killed. Lu Xiaofeng then realises that the town is full of hidden lurking dangers, but he manages to trace the murder to a former imperial concubine named Gong Susu (宮素素). Lu Xiaofeng finds a hidden treasure in the desert after a series of adventures but at the same time those pugilists lurking in the town are also planning to kill him. Lu Xiaofeng is apparently killed while finding the treasure but Ximen Chuixue arrives and reveals that it was a trap set for the villains. All the villains are slain and the heroes leave together happily. For the first time ever, the cold, unfeeling and unsmiling “God of Sword” laughs at the end of the novel.

As she came from a very distinguished line of jewelery makers in the kingdom, she was assigned the task of making a beautiful headpiece in the shape of a phoenix, inlaid with precious stones and tails made from the feathers of exotic birds for the Empress Dowager. However, during a flower viewing outing, the phoenix headpiece worn by the Empress Dowager suddenly bled tears of blood. Taking this as a sign of bad luck, she threw it away and demanded that the jewelery maker, Choi-king, be punished. She died as a result of the harsh beatings. Before she passed away, she told Sam-ho to always remember the significance of her name, “Do kind deeds, speak kind words, spread kindness”. (Sam-ho literally means three goodness/kindness).

At the same time around Choi-king’s death, Lee Yi (Moses Chan), the young prince of Concubine Cheng, met the six years old Sam-ho. He showed kindness to Sam-ho by giving her some white flowers from Choi-king’s favorite tree so she could take it to her dying mother. Later when he had to leave the palace without his mother, feigning mentally ill as an excuse to escape the imminent death threat by the Empress Dowager, Sam-ho gave him some sweet ‘tong lin-chi’, to comfort him on the journey. Because of this, the young prince has developed a good feeling for her.

The Imperial Household Bureau was responsible for managing and directing all household services to the Emperor and the Imperial family of the Tang Dynasty. It was made up of four departments, namely the Houses of Jewelery, Attire, Food and Furnishing. Yuen Tsui-wan (Susanna Kwan), Head of the Jewels, and Chung Suet-ha (Michelle Yim), Head of Attire, were both very fond of Sam-ho for she was a kind-hearted young girl and showed great capabilities in the decorative arts of jewelery and silk work. Both of they fough bitterly to have Sam-ho in their departments. In the end, Sam-ho was assigned to Department of Attire while, Kam-Ling was assigned to the Department of Jewelery.

Years later, Sam-ho grew up to be a very lovely young lady and she met Ko Hin-yeung (Kevin Cheng) the palace scholar and chess teacher, where a secret love bloomed between them. At the same time the young prince now grown up, Lee Yi, return to the palace and become the Emperor after evading assassinations with the help of Sam-ho and Hin-yeung. He promoted Hin-yeung as the Palace General because of his faithfulness. Sam-ho later become the Head of the Jewel Department. Even though the Emperor has deep feeling for Sam-ho and had wanted to marry Sam-hou, he decided to bury his feeling for her when he discovered that Hin-yeung and Sam-ho loved each other.

Sam-ho and Kam-ling continue to enjoy a very close friendship, treating each other as sisters and this provokes jealousy among other palace girl servants. Time and again some of them will try to get Sam-ho and Kam-ling into trouble. However, Kam-ho’s honesty and kind attitude endeared many powerful people in the palace to her and they always help her out. Whereas, Kam-ling uses her cunning mind to get rid of her enemies. As time passed, Kam-ling realizes that to stop the bullying and to be able to survive in the palace she has to be someone powerful and respectful. Therefore, she slowly works on a scheme to gain favour of the Empress Dowager Cheng, Lee yi’s mother. She was eventually chosen as one of the emperor’s concubines. From there she works on a bigger scheme to get rid of all her competitors.
